Pickleball Paddle FAQ
How much should I spend on a pickleball paddle in 2026?
Beginners play perfectly well on a $50–$80 paddle. The value sweet spot is around $85, where the thermoformed Vatic Pro Prism Flash delivers most of what a flagship does. Intermediate and competitive players typically land at $120–$250 for a raw-carbon thermoformed build. Above $250 you are mostly buying pro branding — a $250 JOOLA Ben Johns Perseus and a $400 paddle are far closer in performance than the price gap suggests.
What paddle weight should I use?
Most players do best in the 7.8–8.3 oz midweight range, which balances power and hand speed. Under 7.8 oz favors quick net exchanges and is easier on the arm — the usual recommendation if you have tennis elbow. Over 8.3 oz adds put-away power at the cost of fatigue and elbow strain. You can fine-tune any paddle upward with $8–$12 of lead tape, but you cannot make a heavy paddle lighter.
Is my paddle legal for tournaments?
Only if it appears on the USA Pickleball Approved Paddle List. In late 2024 USA Pickleball introduced the PBCoR standard, which caps a paddle face’s "trampoline effect" at a 0.44 threshold. Paddles exceeding it were removed from certification effective July 1, 2025 — including popular models like the JOOLA Perseus Mod TA-15 (14mm and 16mm) and the Gearbox Pro Power Elongated. A paddle can be delisted after you buy it, so check the official list before you spend.
What is delamination and should I worry about it?
Delamination is when the internal honeycomb core separates from the outer face sheet, creating an air pocket that acts like a spring and gives the paddle illegal extra pop. It mainly affects thermoformed paddles, because of the heat and pressure used to build them, though cold-molded paddles can delaminate after long wear too. It is the reason USA Pickleball introduced PBCoR testing — and the reason buying from an authorized dealer with a real warranty matters.
Does a paddle bought on Amazon come with a warranty?
Only if an authorized seller sold it. JOOLA explicitly excludes paddles bought from unauthorized retailers from warranty coverage; their NFC-chip paddles extend from six to twelve months only if you register through the JOOLA app within 14 days. Selkirk covers its paddles for the lifetime of the paddle, but only with registration, and the coverage is not transferable to a second owner. The Prime badge is a shipping label — read the "Sold by" line instead.
Raw carbon fiber or fiberglass — does the face material really matter?
Yes, and it is the single biggest driver of spin. Raw carbon fiber (typically T700 toray) has a gritty, unpainted surface that grips the ball fractionally longer, producing noticeably more spin than a smooth fiberglass or composite face. Fiberglass is softer and gives more raw power but less control. If you play a few times a month, you will not feel the difference enough to justify the cost. If you play weekly, you will.
